There is a peculiar theatre playing out in Minsk. Alexander Lukashenko, the man who has ruled Belarus since 1994 and once styled himself the last strongman of the Soviet tradition, a leader who answered to no one, now sits at the table of power as little more than a carved figurehead on the prow of a ship he no longer steers. He speaks loudly. He rattles sabers. He threatens neighbors, curses Western capitals, and hosts Russian missiles on Belarusian soil. But the orders come from Moscow, and everyone in the room knows it, everyone, it seems, except Lukashenko himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This report examines how Vladimir Putin has systematically transformed Belarus into an extension of Russian imperial ambition, using Lukashenko as a pliant instrument of nuclear blackmail, hybrid warfare, and civilizational propaganda. It explores how the Russian Orthodox Church has been weaponized as a spiritual arm of the Kremlin’s ideological campaign, and how certain figures within Belarus, men like Archpriest Andrei Lemeshonok of Minsk’s Saint Elisabeth Convent, publicly perform loyalty to Lukashenko while quietly advancing the deeper project of Russia’s absorption of Belarus. The Belarusian dictator, for all his bluster, does not seem to understand that some of those praying for him are also, in their own quiet way, digging his grave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, from time to time, we see Lukashenko publicly berating his own administration, scolding ministers on camera, humiliating officials in televised meetings, denouncing the incompetence of a government he himself assembled and has kept in place for decades. It is a performance of strength, carefully staged for a domestic audience still expected to believe in the strongman myth. He roars at the men he chose, as if their failures are proof of his own exacting standards rather than the inevitable product of a system built on fear, sycophancy, and the elimination of independent thought. The question this spectacle raises, however, is not whether his ministers are incompetent; they plainly are, because competent people do not survive long in authoritarian courts. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
