DW interviews the alleged death squad member.<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Deutsche Welle\u00a0has made public\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/belarus-how-death-squads-targeted-opposition-politicians\/a-51685204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the interview<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0Belarusian-born\u00a0man who\u00a0claims\u00a0to be related to the\u00a0kidnapping and\u00a0assassination\u00a0of Belarusian opposition politicians\u00a0in 1999. The 41-year-old is living as an asylum seeker in\u00a0one of the European countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cmE0uM3WuQ4?si=fRC-21VDdL4GFwSa\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interviewee, calling himself\u00a0<strong>Yuri Garavski,<\/strong>\u00a0says he was with the Belarusian SOBR (Special Rapid Response Unit) from its very beginning and was trained to fight serious offenders involved in organized crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garavski showed DW copies of documents to establish his personal details. The DW research team is reported to have checked his information in three countries before deciding to publish his statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.c97.org\/ai\/359422\/aux-1576675431-aux-1576593803-20191217-1_pavl_garavski_360.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Paulichenka And Garauski At a Meeting Of Special Forces Veterans<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, in the spring of 1999,&nbsp;a \u2018hand-picked group\u2019 of&nbsp;SOBR&nbsp;soldiers&nbsp;abducted and killed Belarus\u2019 former Interior Minister&nbsp;<strong>Yury Zakharanka<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Viktar Hanchar<\/strong>,&nbsp;an ex-Chairman&nbsp;of the Central Election Commission, and businessman&nbsp;<strong>Anatol Krasouski<\/strong>&nbsp;who supported the Belarusian opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>If his words are anything to go by, the orders were given by\u00a0Colonel\u00a0Dzmitry Paulichenka\u00a0(Dmitry Pavlichenko), the founder and commander of SOBR.\u00a0The top officer\u00a0personally\u00a0shot\u00a0down the three\u00a0critics of\u00a0Alyaksandr\u00a0Lukashenka, Garavski claims.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man\u00a0expressed confidence that\u00a0the then Interior Minister\u00a0<strong>Yur<\/strong><strong>y\u00a0Sivakou<\/strong>\u00a0and Security Council Secretary<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/belsat.eu\/en\/news\/lukashenka-orders-his-proxy-to-increase-role-of-presidential-property-department\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Viktar Sheyman<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>knew what was going on behind the scenes; Garavski suggests that President Lukashenka must have been in the picture, but cannot say safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\"><strong><em>\u201cThere\u2019s no written evidence, video recordings, protocols, nothing like that. <\/em><br><em>It was all done verbally,\u201d he told Deutsche Welle.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/actionagainstchildabduction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Assassinations-in-Minsk-v0.webp\" alt=\"Assassinations in Minsk\" class=\"wp-image-56316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/actionagainstchildabduction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Assassinations-in-Minsk-v0.webp 800w, https:\/\/actionagainstchildabduction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Assassinations-in-Minsk-v0-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/actionagainstchildabduction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Assassinations-in-Minsk-v0-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/actionagainstchildabduction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Assassinations-in-Minsk-v0-18x10.webp 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Assassinations in Minsk<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Zakharanka\u2019s body was interred at a burial site at a cemetery in Minsk, Garavski stated; Krasouski and Hanchar were taken to the Begoml military base, executed in the forest, and buried in graves that had been dug in advance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>\u201cNonetheless, questions about the key witness\u2019s motivation do remain unanswered. Why is Yuri Garavski going public with this now? Why didn\u2019t he confide in a media company or an international organization before? What exactly did he do between retiring from active service and fleeing to a Central European country where he applied for asylum? <\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Garavski avoided answering some questions. What is certain is that he has detailed knowledge of the perpetrators,\u201d Deutsche Welle stresses.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 7, 1999, in the area of \u200b\u200bZhukouski Avenue in Minsk, Yury Zakharanka was kidnapped and taken away in a car. General Zakharanka,&nbsp;who&nbsp;was 47 when he went missing, tops the list of disappeared politicians in Belarus. After leaving the position of Interior Minister, Mr. Zakharanka joined the opposition. He had authority with servicemen and initiated the establishment of the independent Union of Officers, which could have stood up against the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On September 16, 1999, the former vice-premier and former chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), Viktar Hanchar, and his friend, businessman Anatol Krasouski, disappeared on the way to the bathhouse. Broken glass and traces of blood were found at the place of their disappearance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is known that Hanchar\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/belsat.eu\/ru\/news\/20-let-nazad-ischezli-viktor-gonchar-i-anatolij-krasovskij\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>prepared<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0documents about Lukashenka violating the Constitution and the illegality of his presidency. In the 90s, the politician and his associates initiated the impeachment of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, the first and still the only president of Belarus, but the process was stopped due to the pressure on the deputies and Russia\u2019s interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Aleh Alkayeu,<\/strong>&nbsp;the then head of pre-trial detention center Nr 1, filed a report on the issue of firearms on the eve of the disappearance of Hanchar, Krasouski, and Zakharanka. Mr. Alkayeu is sure that former Minister of Interior Yury Zakharanka was assassinated by order of Alyaksandr Lukashenka\u2019s minions, and video recordings of the execution do exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2000,&nbsp;<strong>Uladzimir Navumau,<\/strong>&nbsp;who then headed the Interior Ministry, received a report from Major-General&nbsp;<strong>Mikalai Lapatsik<\/strong>, in which the latter named police colonel&nbsp;<strong>Dzmitry Paulichenka<\/strong>&nbsp;as the perpetrator of the kidnapping:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>\u201cThe catch and further elimination of Zakharanka was carried out by a group of soldiers led by Dzmitry Paulichenka (the commander of the military unit 3214). A similar operation was carried out by Paulichenka and his group on 16.09.1999 to catch and kill Hanchar and Krasouski. The planned place of burial is a special plot in Paunochnya Cemetery\u201d.<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After an investigative group consisting of officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the KGB, and prosecutor agencies had caught the traces of kidnappers and arrested Dzmitry Paulichenka, the Prosecutor General\u00a0Aleh Bazhelka,\u00a0and the KGB Head\u00a0<strong>Uladzimir Matskevich<\/strong>\u00a0were ousted. But soon, Paulichenka was released by the personal order of Alyaksandr Lukashenka. In fear of being persecuted, Alkayeu and Bazhelka had to leave Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bodies of Zakharanka, Hanchar, and Krasouski have never been found.
