{"id":45097,"date":"2019-06-20T20:14:50","date_gmt":"2019-06-20T18:14:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/actionagainstchildabduction.com\/?p=45097"},"modified":"2025-07-01T16:43:30","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T14:43:30","slug":"by-2019-06-20-special-rapporteur-to-brief-human-rights-council-on-belarus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/actionagainstchildabduction.com\/ua\/by-2019-06-20-special-rapporteur-to-brief-human-rights-council-on-belarus\/","title":{"rendered":"BY 2019.06.20 Special Rapporteur to Brief UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/euroradio.fm\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/main_image_default_xl_1x\/public\/2023-08\/marin_5_07.jpg.webp?itok=UDjxmX7R\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Special Rapporteur Ana\u00efs Marin to brief UN Human Rights Council on the situation in Belarus<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Human Rights Council on the Situation in Belarus<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Michelle Bachelet, briefed by Ana\u00efs Marin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Human Rights situation in Belarus is catastrophic,<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold its forty-first regular session from 24 June to 12 July 2019 in Geneva, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=24715&amp;LangID=E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>said<\/strong><\/a><em><strong>.<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Michelle Bachelet<\/strong>, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, will open the session on Monday, 24 June, and will update the Council on the situation of human rights worldwide and on the activities of her Office.&nbsp; During the three-week session, the Council will examine over 100 reports on a wide range of issues presented by 24 human rights experts, groups, and mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among these, the Council will be briefed by the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus,&nbsp;<strong>Ana\u00efs Marin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>\u201cBased on the information collected, the Special Rapporteur cannot attest to important improvements in terms of respect for human rights in Belarus,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>said Ms. Marin in her first report, which was prepared for the Council\u2019s summer session.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rapporteur describes the \u201csystemic and systematic human rights violations present in law and in practice.\u201d The findings of the Special Rapporteur indicate the absence of significant improvements and the necessity for the Government of Belarus to clearly demonstrate its commitment to addressing longstanding criticism by introducing concrete, durable changes. Based on her conclusions, the Special Rapporteur addresses recommendations to the Government of Belarus and the international community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ana\u00efs Marin&nbsp;succeeded&nbsp;Mikl\u00f3s Haraszti, who served as the UN Rapporteur on Belarus from 2012 to 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As in previous years, the Government of Belarus has not recognized the mandate of the Special Rapporteur. Commenting on the latest resolution by the Council, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Anatol Hlaz called it absurd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>\u201cThe resolution is absurd, both in its design and on the merits.
